There are many different symptoms of Depression in teenagers. Here are the many symptoms of depressions found in teens. One symptom of depression in teens is crying spells or frequent crying, and persistent sadness. A lot of teenagers may show their sadness by wearing a lot of dark clothing, writing depressing poetry, and listening to dark and depressing music.
Another symptom of depression in teens is social withdrawal. A lot of the time when a teenager is depressed, they may not want to socialize as they normally would, or hang out with their friends anymore, like they used to, or they might even be disconnected from their family members emotionally.
Teens may also experience problems with their self esteem when they are depressed. A lot of the time their self esteems are lower and they don’t care about themselves as much while depressed. They may question their self worth or express that they’re a failure. They may put themselves down and say mean things about themselves, that are not true, like they’re ugly or will never good enough.
Another symptom of depression in teens is skipping or missing school. When a teen is depressed they might not want to go to school. There may be many reasons for this. Maybe they’re being picked on in school, which makes their depression worse, or maybe they feel like because they are depressed they wont do good in school. A lot of the time, when a teen is depressed and not feeling well mentally, there grades drop, because they usually can’t concentrate on school work because of their depression.
Often times when a teen is depressed, they might have a screwed up sleeping pattern. Like for example; they may stay up all night, and sleep all day. Or they may have a huge change in their appetite. They might not want to eat like they normally would if they weren’t depressed or eat more than they usually do.
Teens may also experience physical problems, such as; stomach aches, headaches and feeling dizzy. Their immune systems might also be weakened and they may get sick more often with colds or the flu.
Some teens also experience anger episodes when they are depressed. If they are yelling and screaming for no reason, there is usually a problem behind the yelling and screaming. It’s always a good idea to talk to a teen about what they’re feeling.
One very important thing to look out for when a teen is showing signs of depression is if they’re hurting themselves. Cutting is a very common symptom in teens that are dealing with depression. The reason for this is when they cut themselves, they release emotional tension and replace it with physical pain. If they are cutting it is important to get help for them immediately because it can become a huge problem.
Another thing that is very important to look for in depressed teens are suicidal thoughts or ideas. If a teenager says to you, “I want to kill myself, i hate myself” or “I want to die”, you should always take them seriously, and seek help Immediately. Never take suicidal thoughts lightly. Usually teens having suicidal thoughts is a cry for help.
